East Valley Online (EVO)
About Us
Welcome to East Valley Online (EVO), a proud alternative learning pathway within the East Valley School District family. We believe that a student's education should adapt to their life, not disrupt it. EVO provides a rigorous, self-paced general education option designed to wrap around your student's unique health, wellness, personal, and familial needs—all while keeping them deeply and proudly connected to our local East Valley community.
Our Structure: Learning That Fits Your Life
We operate under Washington State’s Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) framework, meaning our school environment isn't bound by a traditional physical building or a rigid daily bell schedule.
- Self-Paced Pacing: Students have the freedom to access their classrooms 24/7, allowing them to balance their schoolwork alongside personal health schedules, family obligations, or unique commitments.
- Co-Managed Success & Accountability: Every student receives a customized Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP). This model empowers students to take direct ownership and responsibility for their daily learning pace.
- Proactive Monitoring & Support: Students work independently, but they are never on their own. Both online instructors and local East Valley teachers actively track progress behind the scenes, maintaining consistent communication with families and stepping in with targeted support if a student begins to struggle.
What We Offer: A Comprehensive Curriculum
Our platform delivers a robust catalog of online courses that ensure our learners receive the exact same high standard of education found in any traditional school building.
- Core & Diverse Elective Offerings: We provide all standard core content courses alongside a diverse and expansive set of elective options. This allows students to access not only their traditional requirements but also a wide array of specialized classes that they normally wouldn't have access to in a brick-and-mortar building.
- Fully Aligned Coursework: Through our partnership with Red Comet (an OSPI-approved course provider), every class is fully vetted and completely aligned with Washington State and East Valley grade-level essential standards.
- Accredited Progress: High school students earn official, fully accredited credits that keep them directly on track for all local and state graduation requirements.
How We Do It: Local Heart, Digital Delivery
While our curriculum is delivered through a modern online platform, our support system is entirely human and rooted right here in the district.
- Certificated Instructional Staff: Students receive instruction, grading, and mandatory weekly check-ins from highly qualified, certificated online teachers.
- Face-to-Face Support: Unlike fully remote, outsourced programs, EVO provides local, face-to-face assistance from East Valley educators. We combine the ultimate flexibility of digital learning with the dedicated, in-person care and relationship-building that defines East Valley Schools.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Program Structure & Schedule
What does "asynchronous learning" mean, and when does my student have to be online?
East Valley Online (EVO) is a 100% asynchronous program, meaning there are no required live lectures. The digital classroom is open 24/7. Students have the flexibility to build a daily schedule that fits their unique situation, wellness needs, or outside commitments.
Can my student work on weekends or evenings?
Yes. Because the platform is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, students can complete their coursework whenever they are most productive—whether that is early in the morning, late at night, or over the weekend.
Where do students go if they need a quiet place to work or in-person help?
We provide a dedicated on-site learning space right here in the district. Students can visit during scheduled times to work in a quiet environment with reliable internet access, complete their mandatory check-ins, or receive face-to-face tutoring and academic support from East Valley educators.
Credits & Graduation Tracking (High School)
How many classes does a school student take at one time?
To ensure deep focus and mastery, students take a maximum of four classes at a time.
How many credits can my student earn in a year to stay on track for graduation?
Each completed high school course equates to 0.5 credits. To stay fully on track for graduation, an EVO student will complete 12 classes over the course of the school year, earning a total of 6.0 credits. As a student finishes a course, they are enrolled in the next course to keep them on track for graduation.
Requirements & Accountability
What are the main requirements to remain enrolled in EVO?
Alternative learning requires consistent accountability. To remain in good standing, all EVO students must meet two non-negotiable requirements:
- Weekly Two-Way Communication: Students must complete a weekly check-in with their assigned instructor(s).
- Monthly Satisfactory Progress: Students must meet the pacing benchmarks outlined in their customized Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP).
Does my online student have to take state tests (SBA)?
Yes. Because EVO is a public education pathway within the East Valley School District (EVSD), all students are required by law to participate in Washington State testing (SBA/WCAS). Students must come on-site to a district facility to complete these state assessments.
Technology & Resources
Does the district provide a computer for online students?
Yes. The EVSD provides a Chromebook for any enrolled EVO student who needs one. Before a device can be issued, both the student and a parent/guardian must review and sign our district's Technology Use Agreement and EVO Chromebook Loaner Agreement.
Can EVO students participate in sports, dances, and extracurricular activities?
Yes, but participation is not automatic and requires proactive coordination. Because EVO students are members of the East Valley School District family, they are eligible to participate in WIAA sports, clubs, dances, and extracurricular activities at their resident home school.
However, students must fully comply with all building-specific policies, deadlines, and behavior expectations. To participate, families must contact the athletic director or main office of their resident school to make formal arrangements, complete required registration packets, pay associated fees, and verify ongoing academic eligibility.
Specialized Programs & Enrollment
Can Special Education students with an IEP enroll in East Valley Online?
Yes, students receiving Special Education services can participate in EVO, but placement requires an IEP Team Meeting first.
Because EVO is an independent general education platform, it does not staff certificated Special Education teachers. The IEP team must meet to determine appropriate placement and arrange how the student will receive their Specially Designed Instruction (SDI). To fulfill these legal requirements, all SDI minutes must be delivered through an on-site, in-person setting at an East Valley school building.
I see a program listed called East Valley Virtual Academy (EVVA) what is the difference between that and EVO?
Think of EVO as our local track and EVVA as our regional partnership track.
- East Valley Online (EVO) is our premier, full-time program tailored specifically for resident, in-district students living within our boundaries who need a comprehensive, 1.0 FTE general education pathway.
- East Valley Virtual Academy (EVVA) is a separate program structured for out-of-district, private school, or homeschool families who want to partner with East Valley for select coursework, restricted to a maximum of 0.8 FTE per state funding regulations.
If you live within the East Valley School District boundaries, EVO is the correct program for your student.
How the Program Works
Transitioning to an online environment is smooth and highly supported. While East Valley Online offers ultimate flexibility, we maintain a structured framework of accountability and local human connection to ensure your student never feels isolated.
Our program is built on three core operational pillars:
1. The Digital Classroom
- OSPI-Approved Curriculum: All courses are delivered through our digital platform partner, Red Comet.
- State & District Standards: Every class is fully vetted and aligned with Washington State K-12 Learning Standards, including Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
- 24/7 Access: The digital classroom is always open. Students can log in at any time of day or night to complete assignments, watch instructional videos, and take assessments, allowing them to build a daily schedule that fits their life.
- Accredited Credits: High school students earn official, fully accredited credits that count directly toward East Valley School District and Washington State graduation requirements.
2. The Support Network
- Certificated Instructors: Students are assigned highly qualified, certificated online teachers who provide direct instruction, grade assignments, and offer academic feedback.
- Local East Valley Connection: Unlike fully remote, outsourced programs, EVO students have access to local, face-to-face assistance from East Valley School District educators. We pair flexible online learning with local, in-person care.
- Weekly Contact: To maintain compliance and student connection, students participate in a mandatory weekly check-in with certified teachers to discuss goals, progress and address concerns.
3. Progress & Early Intervention
- The Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP): Upon enrollment, a customized learning plan is established for your student, outlining their required courses and estimated monthly benchmarks.
- Student Ownership: This model empowers students to take direct responsibility for their own daily learning pace, building vital time-management skills for the future.
- Proactive Safety Net: Staff members actively monitor student progress behind the scenes. If a student begins to struggle or fall behind, our team steps in to communicate with the student and/or family to build an intervention.
