When Garret Martinez, a former student at Terrace Heights Elementary and East Valley Central, heard that many children in our district didn't have the means to purchase their own school supplies this year, he took action!
Garret understood that being in this position could cause embarrassment for the children and their families and he decided that helping East Valley students come prepared for school, would be the perfect Eagle Scout project.
For his project he chose to focus on serving all three East Valley elementary schools. He began by asking for donations at his church and in the local community. Then, on August 19th, he directed a team of volunteers to collect and separate the donations.
Garret was pleased to find that his efforts resulted in donations that filled 12 boxes, enough for each elementary school to receive 4 boxes of supplies to distribute to students in need. After receiving the supplies, Terrace Heights Elementary Principal, Tami Scrivner stated, "I actually had a parent call yesterday worried that she did not have enough money for school supplies. I told her we had several coming and her daughter would be find. [Garret's] hard work will make a big difference!'
The East Valley School District thanks Garret for his leadership, support and for proving once again, that East Valley truly does have the best students around!
